Larnaca is the oldest continuously inhabited city in Cyprus. The city-kingdom of Kition (in present-day Larnaca) was abandoned sometime after the earthquake of 342. Other ancient cities of Cyprus, were abandoned by their inhabitants.

Chronology of Larnaca

BC (Before Christ)

10000 – 8200BC: Larnaca boasts one of the few places in Cyprus that can show evidence of life during the Pre-Neolithic period. Just a few kilometers from Larnaca, near the village of Agia Anna, the bones of local primitives were discovered.

8200 - 3900 BC: Chirokitia is considered to be the first 'urban' settlement in Europe and is recognised by UNESCO.

40th century BC: It is believed that Noah’s grandson, Khittim, established the first settlement.

13th century BC: The city-kingdom of Kition(Larnaca) was originally established. Kition hosted the great Greek - Mycenaean colonisation.

1200 – 1000 BC: The arrival of Archaeans, a Greek colonist in Kition.

750 – 480 BC: The city kingdom became autonomous and very powerful by the end of the Assyrian dominion in Cyprus.

2nd century BC: Kition prospered in the Hellenistic times under the rule of the Ptolemaic (Empire of Egypt). The last Ptolemaic Queen of Cyprus was Cleopatra the Beautiful.

Larnaca Fort

AD (Anno Domini – The year of our Lord)

649 AD: The Arab – Islamic (Arabians) attempt to occupy Cyprus. Hala Sultan Tekke near the salt lake was founded by the Arabs to honor Um Haram (was the Islamic prophet Muhammad's wet nurse)

1190 – 1486 AD: During the Frankish occupation, Kition began to be called 'L’ Arnica' in French, eventually morphing into Larnaca.

1489 – 1571 AD: The Venetians maximized the exploitation of Larnaca's salt, which they traded with great profit.

1571 – 1878 AD: After the Ottomans(Turkish) invasion, the port of Larnaca remained the most important in Town. In 1625 AD, the castle was reconstructed, as it can be seen today, to serve as the protector of the Larnaca port.

1878 – 1960 AD: The British colonial-style buildings of the palm tree promenade(Finikoudes) and the pier of the Larnaca Marina were constructed a year after the British occupation to serve trade and administration purposes, as the town was still the most important in Cyprus.

1960 AD: The island's independence was earned in 1960 and Larnaca had a mixed predominantly Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot population

Angeloktisti Church

This 11th century Byzantine church, whose name means “built by angels”, was erected over the ruins of an Early Christian basilica in Kiti. The original apse survived together with one of the finest pieces of Byzantine art of the Justinian period, a rare 6th century mosaic of the Virgin and Child between two archangels. Only in Cyprus and in Mount Sinai have mosaics of this period survived the iconoclastic decrees ordering the destruction of most icons and objects of idolatry. Similar mosaics were those from the Church of Kanakaria, now on display in the Byzantine Museum in Lefkosia (Nicosia).

Choirokoitia Neolithic Settlement

The ancient site of Choirokoitia dates back to the 6th millennium BC. It lies in the domain of the village from which it takes its name in the Larnaka (Larnaca) district on the west bank of the Maroni River overlooking the south coast, 6 kilometres from the sea.

he settlement’s only entrance – a stairway integrated within a stone massif that lay against the exterior face of the settlement’s enclosure wall, can be traced for more than 180 metres. Perfectly functional as an entrance and exit, this stairway provided a solution to the problem posed by the fact that the settlement stood 2 metres higher than the surrounding area. Protected by this wall, the houses were crowded together, separated only by narrow strips of land that were used as passage ways and for the disposal of rubbish.

Stavrovouni Monastery

The relevant information can be found in the memoirs of a Russian traveler, Abbot Daniel, who stayed on Cyprus in 1106.

He recorded that the Holy Cross was located on Mount Olympus with the objective of "warding off evil spirits and curing any illness", and he noted, "This cross is like a meteorite, it is not supported in the ground, because the Holy Ghost holds it in the empty space. I, unworthy man, knelt down before this holy, mysterious object and have seen with my own, sinful eyes the inherent holy grace present in this place."

After its foundation, Stavrovouni was occupied by Orthodox monks living according to the rule of St. Basil.

DA VINCI CAFE

An Italian coffee shop in the heart of Larnaca

It is hard to find a coffee shop in Larnaca these days in a prime location with reasonable prices and good quality service. The priority of most establishments in the centre of town is appearance and image, where extravagant interiors along with attractive lighting usually lure those who prefer to be seen than the ones who want to enjoy a good quality beverage in pleasant surroundings. The problem in Larnaca is that there are very few places that offer an alternative. One of those rare exceptions is Da Vinci Café-Bar.

Want to find out more? How could you resist?

Our mission has always been to save the world from mediocre coffee. Back in 1971 most people thought this was a noble yet hopelessly unachievable task. But every cup of our Mocha Italia blend created since then has helped us in our quest.

Now we're the nation's favourite coffee shop, and yet another step closer to a world where bland, average coffee is consigned to history.

Emira Pottery

The EMIRA routes began in 1969 when the founder, Mr Michael, studied ceramics art in Famagusta. In 1975 due to the Turkish invasion in Cyprus, the artist emigrated to Athens where he continued his studies in ceramics art. Following this he opened his own pottery workshop there. In 1987 he returned to Cyprus and established Emira Pottery at 13 Mehmet Ali Str. near St. Lazarus church, as it is today.

The beauty of ceramics inspired him to expand his horizons and open a showroom with his creations. Our workshop is open to the public and visitors will have the opportunity to watch the artists creating, but they will also be challenged to try the magic of clay.

Oak Tree Wine Cellar

The Oak-Tree Wine Cellar was brought to life by family owned company.

The Wine Cellar was constructed with all the required specifications for the ideal display and cellaring of wines. All the wines on display both in the cellar and in our online website have all the information needed in assisting you to attain the wine of your preference. Common characteristic of the wines that we accommodate in our cellar and the new additions that are periodically added to our portfolio is their origin by relatively small producers, cultivated in the wine maker’s own vineyards, bottled on location and in most cases made of indigenous grape varieties. The above characteristics ensure the authenticity of the wines coming from a specific region of the world aiding our ambition to create the ‘Micro Cosmos’ that are originally intended for you.
